Opposing Shoghi Effendi: excerpt from “Entry By Troops” by J.T. Lamb
ONCE upon a time not so long ago a group of people went against Shoghi Effendi in a very offensive way. This was for their own aggrandizement and empowerment. To go against Shoghi Effendi is strictly forbidden by God as written by ‘Abdu’l-Baha in the Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha on page 11. To disobey him [Shoghi Effendi] is to disobey God:
“Whoso rebelleth against him [Shoghi Effendi]… hath rebelled against God; whoso opposeth him [Shoghi Effendi] hath opposed God;… whoso disputeth with him [Shoghi Effendi] hath disputed with God; whoso denieth him [Shoghi Effendi] hath denied God; whoso disbelieveth in him [Shoghi Effendi] hath disbelieved in God; whoso deviateth, separateth himself and turneth aside from him hath in truth deviated, separated himself and turned aside from God.”
Shoghi Effendi, not having a biological son to succeed him, set up a non-biological son successorship in a council in embryonic form that everyone was to turn to upon his passing. This council was an embryonic Universal House of Justice, and was called the first International Baha’i Council. It consisted of two parts: the executive head and the legislative body, in conformity with ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s Will and Testament, which is the charter for the World Order of Baha’u'llah. Anything else would not be Baha’u'llah’s Universal House of Justice. He placed ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s adopted son to be its president, setting up the executive branch. All of its nine members were also appointed by Shoghi Effendi, forming the body. This council was to go through four stages to become the Universal House of Justice. It was, with the membership appointed by him, to become a world court on Mt. Carmel in 1963. Later its body (not the head) was to be elected to form the International Tribunal, that was to bring peace to the world, then it would effloresce into the Universal House of Justice.

No place in Baha’i scriptures or in any of Shoghi Effendi’s writings or discourses are the “Hands” designated to be Shoghi Effendi’s successor or to take over after his passing. In fact the “Hands” ceased to be Hands with the last breath of Shoghi Effendi. They are to function only under the direction of a living guardian, that is, under the direction of Shoghi Effendi. They claimed the authority, that it was them who were to carry out Shoghi Effendi’s plan. Then the defunct “Hands” went against Shoghi Effendi. They took over and prevented the Baha’is from turning to Shoghi Effendi’s successor, the first International Baha’i Council, and set up an administration of their own that is strange to the Baha’i faith, going against each and every one of Shoghi Effendi’s writings for the establishment of the Universal House of Justice. There was not one thing that was spared—a complete violation of everything that Shoghi Effendi stood for.

This principle is founding the baha’i faith, while in itself it unite the believers and refute those who don’t believe the same. While what I saw were poeple who never refute the center of the covenant, or even the guardianship itself. Guardianship is the center of the faith and still a unity force. I saw poeple that would reject baha’i faith as any other faith, for one reason : They canno’t trust in anyway the system of beliefs or what ever is founded upon a prophecy. While finaly, those poeple refute all prophecies, they refute the faith itself.
It’s hard to understand for any baha’i that still believe to be in face of an ennemy of the covenant or someone that hates Shoghi Effendi. While you look at web sites of criticisim like the one of Frederic Glaysher, on bahai cen -sorship, you see a site accumulating letters and message of all kind of different critisism. It starts with books refused by members of the UHJ, like the life of Baha’u'llah’s barber. May be it’s not more usefull for the faith as the life of Pepe, Masson Remey’s driver. Then you arrive to Ruth White’s studies upon Abdu’l Bahà testament’s that upon her own graphological investigation at Congress library has not been written by Abdu’l Bahà itself.
Any Baha’i that goes there and read this article one by one get lost anyway ! It’s organised to loose poeple’s mind. In finishing this site, you don’t believe in nothing anymore.
Believing in Shoghi Effendi’s guardianship is to believe in his writtings, in his prophetical analyse in the future of the world. Facts in cause are inside “Baha’u'llah’s new world order”, like into the articles the guardian wrote in “Star of the west” magazine from 1920. In his way of seing, all past civilisations rose up, get their maximum development and after starts to decline. His own main lecture was about Roman empire decline and Fall by Edouard Gibbons.
He built then the faith upon a global service act community, a world wide one after the 10 years crusade, upon the idea of helping and developing by any mean the pursuit of civi -lisation’s progress. The main idea is inside “Star of the West”, december 1922 : “The kingdom of God on earth, if we want to realise it, if we meant that it happens, can only be realised by the continual pursuit of progress in civi -lisation.”
In this way, we all can see it. Shoghi Effendi’s method is built on the fact that our civilisation can allways progress, any way his materialist and functional structures are ! While non believers finaly says : Any baha’i have no clue about the reality of this assumption. It’s only a proof of belief. Something that came from the heart, nor from the mind. And any baha’i shall never refute this fact !
Can we be certain, absolutly certain : first of the ability of tooday’s human kind to realise it through a dialectic materialist process. And in second, does our science and technology are not limited and finaly for the pursuit of progress, we don’t have from period to period in history to change our mind and vue point about all we were knowing in science and technology until now ?
Looking on the energetical crisis, make the point for tooday. All prospectivist and specialists were agree, 30 years ago to say that natural goods were declining and with the continuous increase of consumsion, we shall see batural lacks, fall down of first material products, ecological crisis, then climate crisis and then social and economical crisis as consequent !
Bur for thrirty years we have all only trusted the world leaders and followed the pursuit of progress based on such unstable methods of production through materialist history. Then tooday, we see Al Gore and all new ecologist explains that the crisis to come shall be more hard, more destructive and worst that anyone before.
I never believe that Shoghi Effendi’s analysis and prophecy ever mention this material way of progress or another way of progress in any means. It mentioned certainly the most efficient way of social and civilised progress that bring us more and more closer to what could be “The kingdom of God on earth”. And our own conclusion for tooday’s crisis is that may be, for the last 60 years, we still stand on the wrong way of building civilisation’s progress !
So there is no way of refusing the faith and the covenant goals. But there still can be way for poeple to refuse a blind faith were poeple don’t take the time to analyse and thinks cleverly about the situation.
