Mythical Jesus
There are numerous reasons why Baha’is don’t accept the commonly held belief that Jesus is God. We do of course believe in Jesus, and the Bible. This is only commonly held among Christians I should say. Muslim believe in him, too. They’re even awaiting his return. But, like the Baha’is, Muslims do not believe he’s God, or in the Trinity. So maybe it’s not the most commonly held belief worldwide, but a whole lot of Christians believe this despite his vehement protest to the idea in the Gospels.
He was one of the most influential and important teachers the world has known. But, it is challenging at best to accept the notion that he was literally and physically the Son of God. We’re supposed to believe he’s part of the Trinity and born of an immaculate conception with God as his father? That we should turn to him and pray to him for our eternal salvation? As someone who believes and admires him, I can’t possibly accpet any of that. This is mainly because of statements that came from Jesus’ very own mouth. Let’s look at a few of the most explicit statements he made denouncing these ideas:
“Go away Satan, for as it is written God alone is to be worshiped.” -Matthew 4:10
“And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.” -Mark 10:18
“I am ascending to my father, to your father; to my God to your God” -John 20:17
So God was also Jesus’ God. He said we should only pray to God (not Jesus). Throughout the Gospels this theme is repeated. Timothy explains exactly what Jesus’ mission was: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” -Timothy 2:5. So here we see he’s a mediator for the “one God” who sent him, not part of a Trinity, whatever that is.
Niether is he literally the physical Son of God according to the Gospels. When examined it becomes obvious that this is his spiritual title. Paul tells the Romans that Jesus was “made of the seed [sperma in Greek] of David according to the flesh, and *declared* Son of God according to the spirit of Holiness…” -Romans 1:3. So he was “declared” the Son of God according to the spirit, i.e. his spiritual title. But literally and physically was made of the “seed of David” of which he could only have gotten from his physical father Joseph.
Furthermore every crowd shot since the invention of television has someone holding a sign up which reads: “John 3:16″. What’s that all about? That verse says that “God so loved the world he gave his only begotten Son”. Okay, sound like a solid case for the whole “God the Son” argument (despite the fact that the phrase doesn’t appear anywhere in the Bible). But why then did God say at his baptism “Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee.”? He was baptised and became the “only begotten Son of God” at age thirty.
Again and again we find this running theme that being the Son of God was a spiritual title for Jesus. Yet, we have this Mythical Jesus that is being taught by the Christian Clergy who supposedly was the literal physical Son of God. This can’t be concluded without adding words and inserting concepts from outside of the Gospels. With these few quotes provided it is plain that neither the Trinity nor the immaculate conception are supported in the Bible. They were inventions of the same corrupt clergy that invented the Mythical Jesus we see being taught in Churches every Sunday.
